Ameren Corp is a holding company formed from the 1998 merger of Union Electric and Central Illinois Public Service Co (holding company was CIPSCO). The two utilities are now called AmerenUE and AmerenCIPS. In 2003 Ameren acquired CILCORP, the holding company for Central Illinois Light Company, and the utility was renamed AmerenCILCO. In 2004 Ameren acquired Illinois Power (renamed AmerenIP) from Dynegy Inc. Prior to Dynegy's 2000 acquisition of Illinois Power, the utility was a subsidiary of Illinova Corporation.
