RS232 and XPR4550
The XPR USB cable will work on XTL radios. I have never tried the other way as you describe. However, make sure you are selecting the proper COM PORT

motorola question
Pre-emphasis and de-emphasis as well as companding should only be used if all the radios in your fleet support it. If not, leave it off.
