More than a quarter of Macoupin County's work force travels to jobs in the St. Louis metro area on both the Missouri and Illinois sides of the Mississippi River, census figures show. Based on those commuting patterns, the federal government now classifies Macoupin County as part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The change is the result of a revision in census definitions.
