NSW Corrective Services

The New South Wales Department of Corrective Services, under various titles, has contributed continuously to New South Wales society generally, and to its criminal justice system in particular, since the founding of the colony in 1788. The Department's mission is to protect the community by managing inmates in an environment which is safe, secure, fair and humane and in a manner which encourages inmates' personal development through the use of correctional programs and their own efforts. The Department oversees: 26 correctional centres - 7 maximum, 8 medium and 11 minimum security facilities 11 periodic detention centres 1 transitional centre for female inmates 69 probation and parole offices Maximum Security Maximum security correctional centres generally have high walls, state-of-the-art electronic perimeter security and strict security inside the walls. These institutions hold inmates whose escape would be highly dangerous to members of the public or the security of the State. As well as sentenced inmates, those who are awaiting trial or sentence and those sentenced by the courts but waiting to be assessed as security risks are generally held in maximum security. The Department operates 7 maximum security correctional centres: Goulburn Correctional Centre Lithgow Correctional Centre Long Bay Hospital Malabar Special Programs Centre (Long Bay) Metropolitan Medical Transit Centre (Long Bay) Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (Silverwater) Special Purpose Centre (Long Bay) Medium Security Medium security institutions are normally surrounded by walls or high security fences. Inside the walls or fences inmates are still under constant supervision but move around more freely than in maximum security. The Department operates 8 medium security correctional centres: Bathurst Correctional Centre Broken Hill Correctional Centre Grafton Correctional Centre Junee Correctional Centre Mulawa Correctional Centre (Silverwater) Parklea Young Offenders Correctional Centre Parramatta Correctional Centre Tamworth Correctional Centre Minimum Security Minimum security institutions hold inmates who can be trusted in open conditions where there are fewer physical barriers to escape. Minor offenders and those nearing the end of their sentences are held in this type of correctional centre.
