This scanner is used, but it has no blemishes or scratches. It has the paid DMR upgrade installed and comes with upgraded batteries.

It does not come with the printed manual or with the box. Online manual is available at

This Uniden BCD436HP digital scanner can monitor communications on APCO 25 (P25) Phase 1, Phase 2, X2-TDMA, Motorola, EDACS, and LTR trunked systems. (Uses Uniden's TrunkTracker V for monitoring trunked radio systems.)

Full types of systems it can monitor:

  • Motorola Type I

  • Motorola Type II

  • Motorola Type IIi Hybrid

  • Motorola Type II Smartnet

  • Motorola Type II Smartzone

  • Motorola Type II Smartzone Omnilink

  • Motorola Type II VOC

  • LTR Standard

  • Project 25 (P25) Standard

  • Motorola X2-TDMA

  • P25 Phase I and Phase II

  • EDACS Standard (Wide)

  • EDACS Narrowband (Narrow)

  • EDACS Networked (Wide/Narrow)

  • DMR Tier III Trunking

  • DMR Conventional

  • MotoTRBO Connect Plus

  • MotoTRBO Capacity Plus

  • MotoTRBO Linked Capacity Plus

The last five in this list are available because I have purchased and installed the DMR upgrade (a $60 aftermarket purchase from Uniden.)

The following frequencies can be monitored:

  • 25-512 MHz

  • 758-960 MHz

  • 1.24-1.3 GHz

(Cellular frequencies cannot be monitored by law.)

You don't have to understand any of the above to use this scanner. Simply press the ZIP button and enter your ZIP code and it will program itself! If you want more control, you have that with the free Sentinel software available from Uniden as a download or you can program it from the radio itself.

  • Uniden Bearcat BCD436HP scanner with belt clip. (DMR Upgrade installed.)

  • Protective case (bought third-party).

  • SMA to BNC antenna adapter.

  • Rubber duck antenna.

  • Set of four Panasonic Eneloop Pro batteries with charger. (These last much longer than other rechargeables.)

More Information (Please review before purchasing.)

Encryption: Please keep in mind that some police departments encrypt their traffic. You cannot use any consumer radio to listen to encrypted police traffic. Make sure you check the system you want to monitor before buying. The easiest way to do that is using Radio Reference ( Once you pull up your system, check the "MODE" value for the talkgroups you want to listen to. If there's an "e" at the end of it, it means that talkgroup is partially-encrypted. If there's an "E" at the end, it's fully encrypted.

Simulcast: Consumer scanners can have difficulty in decoding simulcast radio systems. (Most radio systems don't fall into this category.) This scanner is no different. Before you buy, you might want to check out the information in your state's forum on Radio Reference. ( If you post there and ask folks about monitoring your local system, you'll get good information on whether you can expect to suffer from simulcast distortion. While you can certainly use this scanner even if you suffer from simulcast issues, you'll notice things like occasional garbled transmissions and skipping audio. I don't want you to be disappointed by that, so please check before you buy. Also, feel free to ask questions and I'll gladly help you if I can!
